Coughs are common during the autumn and winter. It’s a defensive mechanism of our body to keep the respiratory tract cleared and expel irritating and infectious agents and mucus.

It’s a habitual symptom of several diseases: cold, bronchitis, flu, asthma, etc. They can be a sign of severe disease, but they are mostly associated with mild viral disorders and are an important reason for auto-medication.

To treat it well, we need to know some important information about it. There is a difference between a dry cough, when expectoration is not produced, and a productive cough, when we expel phlegm. The current tendency, especially with children, tends to not eliminate productive coughing, as it would lead to more mucus retention and a more blocked respiratory tract. Swe can take medicinal plants that help fluidize secretions and enhance expelling. We can also use them to transform non-productive coughs into productive coughs.

These plants can help us treat coughs:

ELDERBERRY (Sambucus Nigra L.)

Its flowers and fruits are used to relieve colds and flu, as some studies have shown the antiviral action of some of its components.

THYME (Thymus Vulgaris L.)

It contains a strong essential oil with bactericidal, antitussive, fluidizing and expectorating properties. It helps relax the smooth muscles of the respiratory tract.

EUCALYPTUS (Eucalyptus Globulus Labill)

It’s rich in essential oil with antiseptic, balsamic and expectorating properties. It enhances mucus excretion and relieves coughs.

MARSHMALLOW (Althaea Officinalis L.) and MULLEIN (Verbascum Thapsus L.)

Both plants contain abundant mucilages, which are responsible for their emollient and soothing action on the respiratory mucus by reducing irritation and relieving coughs.

SUNDEW (Drosera rotundifolia L.)

It’s a plant commonly used by children. It has antitussive properties since it inhibits cough reflexes, and has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and bronchodilator actions as it soothes the smooth bronchial muscle.

WHAT CAN I DO TO RELIEVE COUGHS?

  • Drink abundant liquids to soothe secretions and maintain a hydrated respiratory mucus. A hot infusion is a good option, as heat can also help you expectorate.
  • Sleep with your head raised to enhance breathing.
  • Eat foods rich in beta-carotene (carrot, pumpkin, spinach) and vitamin C (kiwi, oranges, peppers, etc.).
  • Eat honey to soothe sore throats.
