Sideritis sp

Description

Sideritis is a genus of Mediterranean and Asian plants of the Labiatae family. They are shrubby, woody plants, with opposite, linear leaves. The flowers, of variable color, are bilabiate, gamosepalous, gamopetalous and pentamerous. They are arranged forming verticillasatros surrounded by toothed bracts, with four stamens welded to the corolla. It has 4 indehiscent fruits, of brownish color, inside the calyx.

Flowering tops.

Active principles

  • The main components, to which most of the properties are attributed, are the essential oil, terpenes and flavonoids.
  • Other components are phenylethanoid heterosides, coumarins, sterols, lignans and iridoids.

Pharmacological action

  • Anti-inflammatory.
  • Antitussive.
  • Spasmolytic.
  • Digestive and antiulcerous.
  • Antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal.
  • Vulneraria: healing and re-epithelializing.
  • Diuretic.

Indications

  • To relieve symptoms of colds and flu: cough, nasal congestion.
  • Digestive problems: gastrointestinal spasms, heavy digestions, gastritis and gastroduodenal ulcer.
  • In topical use: osteomuscular pain and inflammation, bruises, eczema, inflammation of the mucous membranes, skin mycosis.

Contraindications

Pregnancy and lactation.
